A Half-Century of Legal and Policy Analysis
Jonathan C. Hamilton, “A Half-Century of Latin American Legal and Policy Analysis” (2014)
A half century of Virginia Journal of International Law archives on Latin American law and policy are now available on Latin Arbitration Law, revealing a valuable collection of articles from the oldest continuously published student-edited journal of international law based at the University of Virginia. Jonathan C. Hamilton served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal during law school at the University of Virginia, and subsequently served on its Board of Advisors.
The Virginia Journal of International Law (VJIL, pronounced "vigil") is the oldest continuously published, student-edited journal of international law in the world, based at the University of Virginia School of Law. The VJIL archives reveal a collection of articles spanning more than fifty years that trace the development of legal and policy analysis related to Latin America. This special collection of articles reflects the forefront of analysis on Latin American issues spanning recent decades.
Writing in the 1960s, former VJIL advisor and subsequent Judge of the International Court of Justice Hardy Cross Dillard summed up the contributions of VJIL as follows; “Some years back the notion prevailed, at least in unenlightened quarters, that international law was merely a polite curricular ornament to be viewed with tolerant indulgence by students, mild skepticism by the faculty and benign indifference by the bar. The Virginia Journal of International Law adds another testimonial to the vacuity of this notion.” This collection of Latin American articles is a further testimonial indeed.
